ABSTRACT The purpose of the study is to compare the effect produced by the
application of two techniques: the C3 thrust manipulation and the right upper
trapezius stretching, assessing the pain at this muscle’s trigger point. Patients were divided into three groups: two experimental groups, in which
the stretching technique of the right upper trapezius and the C3 manipulation
technique were performed, and a control group, in which the five-finger cranial
listening was performed. The algometer, the galvanic current machine and the pain analogous scale
were the measurement devices used. The data obtained were submitted to
the measurements with the Kappa coefficient in order to assess the
interoperator concordance.
This analysis showed that both in the algometric measurement, in the
galvanometry and in the analogical scale there was a modification in the
application of the Stretching technique; with the manipulation technique the
variation was much lower and in the control group there were no modifications
neither before nor after the application of the technique. Therefore, we can
say that the Stretching maneuver is more effective at reducing pain at the
right upper trapezius trigger point than the C3 manipulation maneuver. Therefore, we can assert that Stretching is the most appropriate technique to act upon the right upper trapezius trigger point in comparison to the manipulation technique.
